I Keep a Place for You (v2)

[Verse 1]

You left your blue mug by the kitchen sink

A tea ring drying where the handle meets the rim

I found your grocery list beneath the bread

Three things crossed out, one still waiting there

The radiator clicks against the wall

The neighbor’s little dog keeps barking down the hall

I take the long way past the corner store

Still catch myself reaching for one bag more

[Chorus]

I keep a place for you, though you moved on

One chair pulled out when the evening comes

The days roll by, but some things stay

Your name in the small routines of every day

[Verse 2]

The landlord painted over your pencil marks

Where we measured height beside the door

I found a ticket stub inside a coat

From that cheap matinee we both adored

Your sister called; we talked about the rain

She laughed the same way, then went quiet again

I’m learning how to let a room be mine

Without pretending you were never here in time

[Chorus]

I keep a place for you, though you moved on

One chair pulled out when the evening comes

The days roll by, but some things stay

Your name in the small routines of every day

[Bridge]

No grand goodbye, no final scene

Just an empty hook where your keys had been

I can miss you and still make plans

Hold both truths in these two hands

[Chorus]

I keep a place for you, though you moved on

One chair pulled out when the evening comes

The days roll by, but some things stay

Your name in the small routines of every day

[Outro]

Blue mug, clean sink, late afternoon

I leave the chair where it is in the room
