A real R&B brief, and what it lost
A visitor who had not signed up wrote a careful brief: a Korean-ballad tinge, a warm male vocal, 74 BPM, piano, Rhodes, clean guitar, strings that come in late, and then a sentence about the verses that never finished. The studio box stopped at 400 characters then, and this brief stops at “almost like”; it takes 2,000 now.
The prompt that made it
“Dreamy late-night emotional R&B ballad with subtle Korean ballad influence, intimate warm male vocal, tender and vulnerable rather than overly dramatic. 74 BPM. Soft piano intro, clean ambient electric guitar, warm Rhodes, subtle atmospheric synth pads, deep soft bass, restrained R&B drums, delicate strings gradually entering later. The verses should feel extremely close and personal, almost like”
What survived did its job. The lyric is built from objects: a cup still warm on the table, shoes by the door, a last text left open on the screen, a cardigan that smells like rain. The chorus is a single plea, “Don't leave me like this”. The two takes ran 2:52 and 3:07.
Hand your own brief two objects like these (“her coffee cup, the voicemail I can't delete”) and the lyric has something real to hold on to; a list of feelings gives it nothing to picture.
Why R&B songs come out long
R&B songs came from too few people between 4 September and 4 October for a length of their own, so the table sets what R&B requests do against the whole site, and the paragraph below it says what drives length.
| R&B requests | All requests | |
|---|---|---|
| Brought their own lyrics | about 2 in 3 | nearly half |
| Said how fast, in the description or style line | about 1 in 2 | about 1 in 5 |
| Made with the Instrumental switch on | 2% | 6% |
Brought lyrics are where long songs come from: across the site, 13% of songs made from someone's own words pass five minutes, against 4% of described ones, because a song lasts about as long as its words take to sing — roughly four seconds a line. If you need it shorter, set Length in Custom mode on Pro (1:00 to 5:00), or trim the lyric: about fifteen sung lines make roughly two minutes.
The voice carries it
In R&B the vocal is the lead instrument, and the Voice menu has several options made for it.
- Falsetto for the light, high lines of a slow jam.
- Breathy or Soft for a close-mic verse that is almost whispered.
- Harmonies or Group vocals for stacked backing on the chorus.
- Gospel or Belting for a big final chorus.
Menu picks are added to your sentence, so keep them in agreement: “intimate” in the brief with Belting in the menu asks for two different singers.
Slow jam or up-tempo: say which
About half of R&B requests say how fast and half leave it to the engine, and speed is what separates a slow jam from a dance-floor track.
| Feel | Usual speed | Write it, or pick it |
|---|---|---|
| Slow jam | 60–75 BPM | “slow jam, 68 BPM”, or Tempo: 60-80 BPM |
| Mid-tempo R&B | 80–100 BPM | “laid-back groove, 90 BPM”, or Tempo: 80-100 BPM |
| Up-tempo R&B | 100–120 BPM | “bouncy up-tempo R&B, 108 BPM”, or Tempo: 100-120 BPM |
Your own lyrics, and using the song
Custom mode sings what you paste, up to 5,000 characters, with the sound in the Style of music line (“90s slow jam, falsetto, Rhodes, finger snaps”). Streaming the link is free and unwatermarked; the MP3 is $1.99 per song on the free plan and included on Pro and Ultra, with WAV. Releasing the song or putting it under a monetised video is commercial use, which Pro and Ultra license for every song in your library, each with a certificate.
Before you press Create
- One scene and two concrete objects, not a list of feelings.
- A voice: Falsetto, Breathy, Harmonies, or described in words.
- A speed: a BPM figure or a Tempo range.
- Most important first; the box takes 2,000 characters.
- A plan if it has to be short: Length on Pro, or about fifteen lines of your own.
